Kathy Gillis' story as an artist reads: girl from a small town in Quebec goes to Toronto, trains herself as a commercial artist, marries, raises three children while doing freelance work, studies at the University of Ottawa and gets an Honours B.A. in Visual Arts, teaches at the Ottawa School of Art, and regularly exhibits the work born of her curiosity. Ms. Gillis is curious about the countryside and our relationship to it, other creatures and our relationship to them, and about visual language and how to use it more effectively. She studies in a three-acre plot of swamp land in Calabogie, Ontario (an area she has made a commitment to protect) and during her wanderings to other important places. Then, after much wondering and questioning and false starts, she makes things. |
