In existence for over 127 years, the Ottawa School of Art (OSA) follows an honourable tradition of alternative art schools by providing the community with the opportunity for visual expression and creative development.

In addition to exposure to the vibrant arts community within the School, students can take advantage of the School’s excellent location in the heart of Ottawa. Situated in the lively bustle of the ByWard Market, the School is just steps away from the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, and a wide selection of private art galleries.

Students come from all areas of the Ottawa area and represent a diverse range of backgrounds, training and experience. Diploma, Visual Arts Certificate and Portfolio Development students receive the benefits of an intensive pre-professional training program that allows them to complete most or all of their studies close to home.

Educational Philosophy

The OSA Diploma, Visual Arts certificate and Portfolio Development programs place an emphasis on attaining knowledge and skills that are fundamental to the practice of the visual arts. Each program is structured to provide access to general study of a variety of studio areas, while allowing second year diploma and Visual Arts certificate students the opportunity to pursue a particular studio concentration. Studio courses reinforce the mind’s relationship to the hand and the eye. Through the study of Art & Criticism, Contemporary Art History, Media studies and the Business of Art, students achieve a better understanding of recent artistic precedent and relevant historical influences. Providing significant impact within the cultural context in which they will pursue their work.
