Contemporary Artist Creates Disquieting and Problematic Boutique in Byward Market

The Ottawa School of Art presents "Morphic Boutique", an exhibition of works by contemporary Ottawa-area artist Christine Fagan.

Working primarily with fabrics, beads, thread and yarn, Christine Fagan sews and knits sculptural, thought-provoking works reminiscent of women's fine clothing boutiques. These works cross the conceptual boundaries between matter and the genetic information patterns found in nature and take form in shapes that are familiar as our own bodies, yet startling in their mutations. Fagan observes, through her work, that the evolutionary relationship of matter and information can be problematic, resulting in a dangerously unpredictable process.

"At times, in nature, the fusion of information and matter can misfire, with results which fall outside the boundaries of predictable development, and are often pathological," explains Ms. Fagan. "These works could be seen as metaphors for these miscommunications; they are, in effect, mutations."

The vernissage for this exhibition will be held on Thursday, October 4th, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. The Ottawa School of Art is located at 35 George Street in the Byward Market. Admission is free.
